How many way DB for home? DB box size for 1BHK, 2BHK and 3BHK in Siliguri, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar

How many way DB for home? A 2BHK needs an 8–12 way DB, 1BHK 6–8 way, 3BHK 12–16 way. Count one way per circuit, add spares; use TPN for three-phase.

For most homes, a 2BHK needs an 8 to 12 way DB, a 1BHK needs a 6 to 8 way DB and a 3BHK needs a 12 to 16 way DB. Count one way for every circuit (lights, sockets, each AC, each geyser, kitchen) and then add 2 to 4 spare ways for the future. If your house has a three-phase supply, you need a TPN DB instead of a single-phase SPN DB.

This is a common question from families building or renovating a house or flat in Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Malda. The same advice works across North Bengal, Bihar and Sikkim. Below is a simple way to count your circuits, pick the right DB box and tell the shop exactly what you need.

What does “way” mean in a DB box?

A DB (distribution board, also called a DB box or MCB box) is the metal box that holds all the MCBs of your house. One “way” is one slot for one single-pole MCB. So an 8 way DB can hold 8 single-pole MCBs, which means 8 separate circuits.

The main switch of the house (usually a DP MCB, isolator or RCCB) normally sits in a separate incomer space. In many single-phase boards this incomer space is not counted in the ways, but it differs by brand and model. Always check the model details, or simply ask us when you order.

How many way DB for 1BHK, 2BHK and 3BHK?

First list your circuits. A heavy load like an AC, geyser or induction gets its own MCB and its own wire. Lights and fans are grouped, and normal sockets are grouped. Here is a typical count. These are general trade practice figures, not a rule — your electrician will set the final count from your drawing.

House sizeTypical circuitsSuggested DB size
1BHK flat2 light/fan, 2 socket, 1 AC, 1 geyser, 1 kitchen6–8 way SPN
2BHK flat or house2–3 light/fan, 2–3 socket, 2 AC, 1–2 geyser, 1–2 kitchen8–12 way SPN
3BHK house3–4 light/fan, 3–4 socket, 3 AC, 2 geyser, 2 kitchen, 1 outdoor12–16 way SPN
Duplex / 4BHK or moreMany ACs, lift or pump, outdoor lights16 way+ SPN, or TPN if three-phase supply
Shop or small officeLights, sockets, 1–2 AC, signboard6–8 way SPN

Simple rule: count your circuits, add 25–30% spare ways, then round up to the next standard size (4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 way). An empty way costs very little today. Adding a second DB later costs much more and makes the wall look messy.

SPN vs TPN DB — which one do I need?

This depends on your electricity connection, not on the size of the house.

Look at your meter or your electricity bill. If WBSEDCL has given you a three-phase connection, the DB should be TPN so the load is shared across the three phases. Many larger homes also use a TPN DB with a phase selector or keep some circuits on each phase. Let your electrician plan the load balance.

Single door or double door DB?

Both do the same job. The difference is looks and safety.

  • Single door DB: one door covers the MCBs. Cheaper and fine for most homes.
  • Double door DB: an outer door plus an inner cover. The MCB handles are behind the outer door, so the board looks neat and children cannot easily touch it. Good for living rooms and corridors.

For homes in our humid, monsoon-heavy area, choose a powder-coated metal DB with a proper gasket or a good-quality board meant for the location. Do not fix the DB in a bathroom wall, below a window that gets rain, or on a damp outside wall. Damp inside a DB leads to rust, loose contacts and nuisance tripping.

Should the DB have an RCCB?

Yes, we strongly suggest it. An MCB protects the wire from overload and short circuit. An RCCB protects people from electric shock when current leaks to earth. A 30 mA RCCB is the usual choice for home circuits like sockets, bathrooms and geysers. You can fit one RCCB as the incomer for the whole house, or use RCBOs on wet-area circuits.

Never bypass an RCCB that keeps tripping. Tripping usually means a leakage fault or a bad appliance, so call a licensed electrician to find it. If you want to understand each breaker clearly, read our guide on MCB, RCCB, RCBO and MCCB. For the geyser circuit specifically, see which MCB for geyser.

Which brand DB is best for home?

Buy a DB and MCBs from a known brand and, ideally, from the same brand. MCBs from one brand may not fit properly on another brand’s DIN rail and busbar, and a loose fit can heat up. Check that the MCBs carry the ISI mark under IS/IEC 60898-1.

We are an authorised dealer for Havells and Lauritz Knudsen (L&T), and we also deal in Legrand, Schneider, Siemens, Anchor and other brands. All of them make good home DBs. The choice usually comes down to the MCB range your electrician prefers, the look you want and your budget. Shree Shyam Suppliers can give you an itemised quote for the same set in two or three brands so you can compare side by side.

What decides the DB box price?

We do not post rates online because they change with brand and stock. The price of a DB set depends on:

  • Number of ways — 8 way, 12 way, 16 way and so on.
  • SPN or TPN — TPN boards and 4-pole incomers cost more.
  • Single or double door, and metal thickness or finish.
  • What goes inside — the number of MCBs, their ratings, and whether you add an RCCB or RCBOs.
  • Brand and range — premium ranges cost more than basic ones.

What should I tell the shop when buying a DB?

Take this simple checklist to any counter, or send it to us:

  1. Supply type: single-phase or three-phase.
  2. DB type and size: SPN or TPN, number of ways, single or double door.
  3. Flush (inside the wall) or surface (on the wall) mounting.
  4. Incomer: DP MCB or isolator rating, and RCCB rating (for example 40A, 30 mA).
  5. Outgoing MCBs: how many of each rating (6A, 10A, 16A, 20A, 32A) and curve (usually C curve for homes).
  6. Brand preference.

Buying the DB, MCBs, RCCB and wires from one local dealer saves running around. You get genuine stock, the right matching parts, and advice before you buy. See our full range of distribution boards and panels.

Always get the DB installed, connected and tested by a licensed electrician. Make sure the board is properly earthed.

Quick answers

Is an 8 way DB enough for a 2BHK?

An 8 way DB is enough for a simple 2BHK with one or two ACs and one geyser. If you plan more ACs, two geysers or separate kitchen circuits, take a 12 way DB so you have spare ways.

What is the difference between SPN and TPN DB?

An SPN DB is for a single-phase supply and holds single-pole MCBs. A TPN DB is for a three-phase supply and has ways on each of the three phases, with a 4-pole main switch.

Single door or double door DB, which is better for home?

Both work the same. A double door DB has an outer door that hides the MCB handles, so it looks neater and is safer where children are around.

Can I use MCBs of one brand in another brand's DB?

It is better not to. MCBs and DBs of the same brand are made to fit each other's rail and busbar, and a loose fit can heat up over time.

What is the DB box price for a 2BHK?

It depends on the number of ways, SPN or TPN, single or double door, the MCBs and RCCB inside, and the brand. WhatsApp us your list for today's rate.
